Title: FAR 2018/21 - Analysis of paua maturity and growth.
FAR-2018-21-Paua-Maturity-and-Growth.pdf (3.0 MB)
Relationships between paua maturity and length (and other morphometric measurements) were investigated. Additionally, growth increment models were fitted to tag release-recapture data. Both sets of analyses were conducted at the site level for all available growth and maturity data. For sites that had both maturity and growth data, yield and spawning per recruit analyses were conducted to evaluate the trade-off in yield and spawning potential resulting from the current and alternative MLSs.

Title: The 2016 stock assessment of paua (Haliotis iris) for PAU 5D.
FAR-2017-33-PAU-5D-Stock-Assessment.pdf (3.7 MB)
This report summarises the stock assessment for paua (Haliotis iris) in PAU 5D, which included fishery data up to the 2015–16 fishing year. The reference case stock assessment model estimated that the spawning stock population in 2016 (B2016) to be 28–43% (values are 95% CIs) of unfished spawning stock biomass (B0). All three models taken to projections concluded that the stock is very unlikely to fall below the soft and hard limit, and that the stock will increase under current catch levels.

Title: Paua length at maturity in PAU 2, PAU 5B, PAU 5D, and PAU 7
FAR-2017-10-Paua-length-at-maturity.pdf (524.1 kb)
Length at maturity was estimated at five sites in PAU 7, and four sites in each of PAU 2, PAU 5B, and PAU 5D.The lengths at which 50% and 95% of samples were mature were generally about 90 mm and 100 mm respectively. Shell length/height ratios varied between sites and ranged between 3.40 and 3.87. There was a strong linear relationship between length at maturity and length/height ratio.

Title: Paua (Haliotis iris) length at maturity in PAU 3 and PAU 5A.
FAR-2017-25-Paua-length-at-maturity-PAU3A-PAU5.pdf (894.9 kb)
Length at maturity was estimated at five sites in PAU 3 and at four sites in PAU 5A. It varied slightly between sites within both QMAs, but the lengths at which 50% and 95% of samples were mature were usually about 90 mm and 100 mm, respectively. Examination of gonads indicated that visual assessment of maturity was adequate. Shell length, width, and height were examined to see if they are useful predictors of length at maturity. Shell width explained slightly more of the variance in maturity, but not much more than length.

Title: 2016/ 39 Fine-scale assessment of growth rings in paua (Haliotis iris).
FAR-2016-39-PAU-growth-rings.pdf (1.2 MB)
Protein layer deposition at the shell spire of paua is clearly not driven by either temperature or spawning activity. The deposition of protein layers on the inner surface of shells appears to be a continuous process. A dramatic fall in the gonad index between August and October 2014 was highly likely to indicate a spawning event in the area over that period. A sharp decline in water temperature at this time may have provided a cue for spawning.

Title: The 2015 stock assessment of paua (Haliotis iris) for PAU 7.
FAR-2016-35-PAU7-Stock-Assessment.pdf (3.3 MB)
This report summarises the stock assessment for PAU 7 which includes fishery data up to the 2014–15 fishing year. The base case model estimated that the spawning stock population in 2015 was 18% (16–21%) of B0. The model projection made for three years using recruitment re-sampled from a period with both high and low recruitment (2002–2011), suggested that the spawning stock abundance will increase to 22% (16–29%) of in 2018 if the future catch remains at the current level, or 24% (18–31%) of B0 if the future catch is reduced to 50% of the TACC.

Title: Determination of length at maturity of paua around the Taranaki coast
FAR-2016-23-Taranaki-Paua.pdf (1.3 MB)
Length at maturity of paua (Haliotis iris) was estimated from four sites around the Taranaki coast in 1998 and in 2015–16. Lengths at maturity are low compared with most commercial paua fishery areas. The length distributions at the sites were similar between sampling times. The length distribution, the shape of the larger shells, and the relatively low lengths at maturity indicate that paua at the Taranaki sites don’t grow as large as other paua populations around New Zealand

Title: Generating random transects in PAU 5D using the NIWA survey design tool
FAR-2016-16-PAU-Transects.pdf (1.6 MB)
Objective 2 of the Ministry for Primary Industries’ project PAU 2008-02 involved timed-swim surveys of PAU 5D to estimate the abundance of paua in the commercial fishery. After two reviews of the timed-swim methodology it was concluded that the relationship between abundance and the survey indices was unlikely to be linear. The Shellfish Working Group decided to discontinue these surveys and to trial lead-line transect survey methods within part of PAU 5D to assess whether the variance associated with density estimates was low enough for the estimates to usefully inform the stock assessment model. The Shellfish Working Group discussed and agreed upon a survey methodology, which included the random selection of sites and a means of ensuring that transects were traversed perpendicular to the shore. To facilitate the design of surveys NIWA developed a survey design tool available to use in the open source GIS application QGIS. This document describes the survey design, the survey tool, and provides instructions of the use of the survey tool which is available from the standard QGIS plugin repository as “Survey design plugin”.

Title: FAR 2015/77 Literature review of abalone ageing techniques.
FAR-2015-77-Literature review of abalone ageing techniqes.pdf (1.0 MB)
The estimation of age in abalone using shell growth rings has been achieved using two main techniques. These are the counting of external growth checks on the shell and the counting of internal growth checks within sections of the shell. Stable oxygen isotope analyses appear to be the most reliable method of validating the timing of growth check deposition.

Title: FAR 2015/71 Assessing the performance of paua Haliotis iris fisheries using GPS logger data.
FAR-2015-71-Paua-data-logger.pdf (3.3 MB)
The pāua data-logger data collection programme is an industry-led initiative to achieve monitoring of the fishery. The loggers collect fine-scale dive and position data from free-diving fishers. In this study, we provide a first analysis of the data obtained from the programme, characterising its uptake and coverage in the fishery and use linear mixed models to investigate the importance of dive patterns for reported catch. Bottom time was found to be the best predictor of catches within QMAs.

Title: FAR 2015/69 Potential techniques for ageing paua.
FAR-2015-69-paua-ageing-comparison.pdf (1.3 MB)
Several techniques to estimate age in paua have recently been investigated, including the counting of protein layers in the shell, oxygen isotope ratio techniques and radiocarbon dating. In three of the nine shells examined the estimate of age was similar across all three techniques. In the other six shells the number of protein layers in the shell and the estimated isotopic ages were much more similar than the radiocarbon dating results.

Title: FAR 2015/63 Paua ageing using protein layers in the shell.
FAR_2015_63_ageing paua using no of protein layers .pdf (5.9 MB)
This project aimed to determine whether protein layers in the shells of paua could reliably be used to estimate age in paua. There appeared to be a relationship between the number of protein layers in the shell and the age indicated by stable oxygen analyses in many of the shells examined; however, there was no evidence that the protein layers were laid down on an annual basis.

FAR_2014_31_2823_PAU2013-07 (MS2).pdf (3.4 MB)
Data from the industry-led pāua data logger programme were used to assess changes in standardised catches between the 2012–13 and 2013–14 fishing years in the pāua (Haliotis iris) fishery in quota management area PAU 7. We applied qualitative comparisons of temporal trends in catch as well as modelling of catch data to obtain indications of potential changes between fishing years. We found that the combined evidence did not support a decline in CPUE and overall performance of the fishery.

Title: The 2012 stock assessment of paua (Haliotis iris) for PAU 5D
FAR_2013_57_2680_PAU2008-02_Obj4_MS16_RR1.pdf (1.2 MB)
This report summarises the stock assessment for PAU 5D which includes fishery data up to the 2011–12 fishing year. The base case model estimated that the spawning stock population in 2012 (B2012) was about 35% (28–44%) of B0. The model projection made for three years assuming current catch levels and using recruitments re-sampled from the recent model estimates, suggested that the spawning stock abundance will increase to about 39% (27–54%) of B0 over the next three years.

Title: The 2011 stock assessment of paua (Haliotis iris) for PAU 7
12_27_FAR.pdf (1.0 MB)
This report summarises the stock assessment for PAU 7 with the inclusion of data up to the 2010–11 fishing year. It describes the model structure and output, including current and projected stock status. The stock assessment is implemented as a length-based Bayesian estimation model, with point estimates of parameters based on the mode of the joint posterior distribution and uncertainty of model estimates investigated using the marginal posterior distributions generated from MCMC simulation.
